Microcement FAQ
A detailed FAQ covering how microcement works, where it can be used and what to expect before, during and after installation.
What exactly is microcement? +
Microcement is a thin, cement-based coating applied in multiple layers over a prepared surface and then sealed. It delivers the look of a continuous, concrete-like surface at around 2–3 mm thick, without the structural weight of a full concrete slab.
Where can microcement be used in my home? +
Microcement works well on bathroom walls and floors, showers, ensuites, laundries, internal floors, feature walls, fireplaces, stair walls and some benchtops. It needs a stable, suitable substrate underneath, which we assess during your site visit.
Can microcement be installed over existing tiles? +
In many bathrooms and floors we can install over tiles as long as they are stable, well bonded and correctly prepared. We check for movement, hollow spots and cracks during the site visit before confirming that tiling over is suitable.
Is microcement waterproof and suitable for showers? +
The waterproofing comes from the membrane below the microcement, not the microcement alone. In showers and wet areas we install microcement as part of a system over a compliant waterproofing membrane, then seal it with high performance sealers to create a durable, water resistant finish.
Does microcement crack easily? +
Hairline cracking is usually caused by movement in the substrate rather than the microcement itself. We minimise this risk by checking the existing surface, treating cracks, using mesh reinforcement where required and following the full manufacturer system. A stable base is critical for long term performance.
How thick is the microcement system? +
The full system, including base coats and finishing coats, is usually around 2–3 mm thick above the prepared substrate. This is ideal for renovations where you need to keep floor levels controlled at doorways and around cabinetry.
Is microcement slippery on bathroom floors? +
For bathrooms, ensuites and other wet areas we use textures and sealers that are designed to provide slip resistance while still being easy to clean. The finish is not a glossy, polished surface. Instead it has a controlled, matte or satin texture.
How long does microcement installation take? +
Most standard bathrooms and medium sized floors take around 6 to 8 days on site, followed by a curing period for the sealers. Larger projects, complex details or extra preparation work can extend this. We provide a clear schedule before work starts so you know what to expect.
How long before we can use the bathroom or walk on the floor? +
You can usually walk on surfaces carefully after the initial curing period we specify, but we recommend avoiding heavy use, dragging furniture or placing rugs for a short period while the sealer continues to harden. For bathrooms, we provide clear guidance on when showers and wet areas can be used.
How do I clean and maintain microcement? +
Day to day, use pH neutral cleaners and a soft mop or cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, abrasive pads and steam cleaners, as these can damage or dull the sealer over time. We provide a simple care and maintenance guide with recommended products at handover.
Will microcement stain or mark? +
The sealer provides good resistance to everyday spills when cleaned promptly. Strong dyes, hair colours, fake tan and harsh chemicals can damage or mark the surface if left sitting. In high use areas we recommend wiping up spills quickly and following the care guide to protect the finish.
Can microcement be used with underfloor heating? +
Yes, microcement can be used over compatible heated substrates provided the heating system is installed and commissioned correctly. We follow specific installation steps and curing times to allow for thermal movement and to protect the system.
Is microcement suitable for outdoor areas? +
There are exterior microcement systems designed for outdoor use, but they need the right substrate, falls and detailing for weather exposure. For each project we assess whether microcement is appropriate outside or if another solution would be better.
What colours and finishes are available? +
Microcement is tinted by hand, which gives a wide range of neutral and earthy tones. We can work from a curated colour range or discuss custom tones. Textures can be softer and more minimal or more expressive and rustic, depending on the look you are after.
How does microcement compare to tiles on cost? +
Microcement is generally a premium finish. When you consider demolition saved, fewer grout lines and the continuous look it provides, it often sits in a similar range to quality tiles plus installation, and below the cost of many stone or full polished concrete solutions.
Is microcement suitable for homes with kids and pets? +
Yes, microcement is designed as a practical, sealed surface. As with any finish, sharp objects, dragging heavy furniture or strong impacts can cause damage. We recommend felt pads under furniture and normal care to minimise unnecessary wear, especially in high traffic areas.
Can microcement be repaired if it gets damaged? +
Small marks and general wear can often be improved with cleaning and, where appropriate, resealing. Localised damage may be repairable with careful sanding and touch up work, but in some cases it is better to refinish a full area so the colour and texture stay consistent.
Will microcement affect resale value? +
Well executed microcement can add value in the same way as any high quality, architectural finish. It gives bathrooms and living areas a modern, cohesive look that many buyers associate with higher end homes and boutique hotels.
What is the process to get a quote for my project? +
We start with a Consultation call to understand your project, timelines and goals. From there we arrange a site visit to inspect substrates, measure, discuss colours and textures, then provide a detailed written quote.
What happens if issues appear after the project is finished? +
If you notice something you are unsure about after handover, we ask that you contact us as soon as possible. We review photos, discuss what you are seeing and, if needed, arrange a visit to assess the surface and recommend the best solution.
