Can Microcement Flooring Go Over Tiles? Melbourne Suitability Checklist

If you want a straight answer on suitability, send photos + suburb + rough m² and we’ll advise quickly.

One of the most common questions we get: can microcement flooring go over tiles? Often yes, but not always. The tiles must be stable, and the system must be built correctly.

See examples and our process here: Microcement Flooring Melbourne.

The short answer

Yes if your tiles are solid, stable, and can be prepared properly.
No (or “not yet”) if there’s movement, hollow/drummy patches, or a compromised substrate.

Melbourne suitability checklist (microcement over tiles)

1) Tiles must be stable

  • No movement or lifting
  • No cracks caused by substrate issues
  • No loose edges at thresholds

2) Check for “drummy” or hollow tiles

Hollow tiles can indicate poor adhesion or movement risk. Microcement is rigid, so the base needs to be reliable.

3) Levelling and joint control

Tile joints can “telegraph” through if the surface isn’t levelled correctly. Correct prep prevents joint ghosting and creates a clean finish.

4) Primers, reinforcement, and proper system build

Microcement is a layered system. The goal is a stable base, reinforcement where required, a controlled build, and the right sealing system for the space.
